Introduction

Welcome to our project website on the educational applications of Second Life!  As a team, we chose to focus our topic on Second Life's geometry applications for high school students.  We have analyzed and recorded our findings on how to best utilize this platform for instruction.  We met, planned, prepared, and presented our findings via this Wiki.  We collaboratively created a research report, conducted a class field trip, and designed a multimedia presentation that documents our findings.

Abstract

Second Life is an online community where people can come together in a Three-Dimensional (3D) virtual environment to communicate with friends or strangers for friendship, business, or even education.  This project will look at how Second Life can be used to teach high school students geometry.  Three dimensional objects can be created and modified to provide a 3D visual of geometric concepts, examples, or assessments.  Learners can interact with these geometric objects as preset learning activities in an environment that can closely resemble real life.  Second Life provides a way to interact with and learn from a 3D environment which gives it an educational edge over textbooks, static webpages, or even multimedia videos and presentations.

This Wiki website will be used to host our collaborative report.  It will include a theoretical research overview of 3D environments used for learning purposes, a few interesting educational resources, and a learning scenario on geometry.  It will also document our team's experiences while in Second Life.  At the conclusion of the project, we will provide a multimedia presentation that will summarize our experiences with Second Life, which will include our critique of it as a learning tool.

I think that if we lower the lesson to at least middle school, it would ease the stress of the math problems. If many of you are very comfortable with high school math/geometry then we can leave it and it is fine with me. Just a thought!

i think we should somewhere there add how in the world of paper and text book it is so hard for student imagine a 3d object, but with second life it is much easier to see and play with.
